Since 1997 our corporate “Smile Club” has opened “a class for children weak in exercise”, as a physical exercise class that can also be attended by mentally retarded children. This one class, which we started in the city of Kashiwa, Chiba Prefecture, in response to an appeal from a mother with her autistic child, has now developed into 11 classes in 6 regions, as we see today. Through this activity widely spread by word of mouth, I felt again how little chance of taking exercise there is for disabled children except in class or in school. Since I started activity in 2001 as NPO corporate (Non-Profit Organization) I happened to share my idea with Ya-Ru Huang, a Chinese professor who was then studying sports for thedisabled in Japan and desiring to open a similar class also in China She invited me to observe a weak children’s school in Beijin, and in 2002 we jointly prepared a sports exercise manual. The next year, with a subsidy from the Japan Foundation, and guided by Gi-Hong Seo, a teacher at a Korean school for the deaf, we observed a weak children’s school in Seoul, and in 2004, guided by Prof. Suthi of a college of physical education, we visited a royal weak children’s school in Thailand. Despite differences of the state and system among weak children’s schools in respective countries, we realized that what we have in common as friends in the same Asia was our sympathy with disabled children and adults. What we specially felt this time was that every country was emphasizing the participation of the disabled in sports, and that there was a need for surroundings where the healthy and the handicapped could jointly enjoy sports. As a result, as NPO corporate “Smile Club”, we began to cherish a dream of exchanging friendships among these countries, preferably including children and adults, whether they are disabled or not. The workshop we organized this time was a very big opportunity as the first step to attain this dream. At first, we intended to narrow our theme down to the mentally retarded children ( including adults) but changed it to the disabled in general, which is more comprehensive,in our aim of mutually understanding today’s situation of the disabled in each country. Despite insufficient time we could spare for preparations our aim of the workshop has been successfully achieved, thanks to enthusiastic presentations by all the professors and teachersthat took part in the workshop. We would like to express our sincere appreciation to the Japan Foundation. As we had expected, sports surroundings for the disabled were lagging far behind those for the healthy in every country we visited, and this posed many specific tasks on each country. We will be very glad if our discussion can be of any help to searching a solution to them in each country. But if we have a workshop once for all and no more, we shall find it impossible to find any solution. We earnestly desire to achieve our dream by all means some day, by organizing workshops repeatedly, for the 2nd time and for the 3rd time.
